  • Is it safe to fall asleep with a heating pad on?

My apartment isn’t insulated and I can’t afford heat/hot water. My electric heater is barely working and wearing layers doesn’t seem to be helping. It’s about 20 degrees outside as well.I have been using a heating pad in bed for heat, but never fell asleep with it. I think it automatically shuts off when it reaches a certain temp., does it make it safe?

I think its safe, but still, for maximum safety, turn it off.

No. Please don’t fall asleep with it, especially if you’re pregnant. You could wake up with burns. Try going to Walmart and buying one of those small humidifiers. It will help keep you warm. Also, contact your gas and electric company. It should have programs for low-income families.

P.S.- It’s really not safe to go to sleep with an electric heater on either. It could fall over and cause a fire. If you’re going to do that, make sure it’s secure, and not radiating heat directly on you.

Yes, that should be safe. But, to be sure what you could do, and this works because I live in the southwest and a lot of places don’t have heat during the winter cuz it is only cold for like 2 months a year, you can put the heating pad in your bed while your awake and allow it to heat up your blankets so they are still warm when your in bed. You can also invest in a hot water bottle, I believe you can buy them at the drug store for a reasonable price and use that when you do fall asleep since it won’t overheat or burn you. Also check out your local craft fairs, some places sell corn or seed bags. You put them in the microwave for a few minutes and it heats up the corn or seeds and works the same as a hot water bottle or portable heating pad.
